Dell Latitude 2. 12. Review & Rating. At first blush, the Dell Latitude 2. It's travel friendly, comfortable to use, and performs well across all our benchmark tests. It's not without its flaws, however. A tiny trackpad and a small hard drive stunt its rating, but only a little. The real kicker has nothing to do with the netbook's physical specification, but rather its price tag. For about $1. 80 less, you can get the Editors' Choice HP Pavilion dm. ![]() ![]() Get instant insight on any electronic component. Automate your workflow. AMD Fusion CPU and bigger hard drive. Design. The Latitude 2. The bright- hued panels have an imprinted grid pattern that give the rubberized panels an even better grip, and make it easy to grab and go. The Latitude 2. 12. The interior is matte black ABS plastic, and has no discernible flex in the chassis. Just above the keyboard, you'll find a power button and volume controls. The keyboard is nearly full- sized, with traditional- style keys. While many netbook keyboards feel small and cramped, this felt fairly comfortable. The only time I ever felt that the keyboard was cut- down to fit the netbook form factor was while using the arrow keys, which are crammed into the bottom right corner of the keyboard along with the page up and page down buttons. The touchpad used on the Latitude is also tiny, even when compared with that of other netbooks, like the HP Mini 1. If you can get past the small size, you'll find that the touchpad supports two- finger gesture controls like scroll and zoom, and the right and left mouse buttons click quietly and smoothly. The 1. 0. 1- inch display is as basic as it gets, with 1,0. HD video out of the question, but still is sufficient for Web browsing. Similar displays can be found on the Asus Eee. PC 1. 01. 5PEM ($3. Acer Aspire One D2. If you wanted to bump up to a larger screen, the HP dm. The two speakers located to either side of the screen provide surprisingly consistent sound, whether at high volumes or low. The sound is fairly clear, but sounds small. There's no bass whatsoever, and at high volume the sound is a bit tinny, but there was no distortion, and the clarity, while not spectacular, is better than I expected on a netbook. Features. The Latitude 2. VGA output, two USB 2. Ethernet, 8. 02. 1. Wi- Fi, and an SD card reader; but there were a couple of surprises, like two Kensington Lock slots, one on either side of the unit. And, while plenty of netbooks include an integrated webcam, the Latitude 2. The Latitude 2. 12. GB hard drive, which is standard fare for netbooks; both the HP Mini 1. Acer Aspire One AOD2. GB drives, but do so at a considerably lower price. While there are netbooks in the $6. GB hard drives, like the HP Mini 2. Unlike many netbooks, which come with a raft of pre- installed bloatware, the Latitude 2. Dell provides a few basic utilities, such as a backup and recovery manager, but otherwise the only extra software is a starter version of Microsoft Office, which provides free limited versions of Word and Excel with a side of advertisements. Aside from these, Dell doesn't try to force any irritating trial software or adware on you, a move more manufacturers should follow.
